Our Activities

Lereko is an empowered investment company. Lereko’s investment focus is on sectors that are key anchors of the South African economy. The company draws on the experience and background of its shareholders in identifying those sectors where it is best positioned to add value.

The operational structure of Lereko mirrors the company’s philosophy of being an active and value adding business partner. The company establishes specific business units for all the key sectors where the company has significant interests. These business units are led by specialist executive managers whose roles are to continuously explore business opportunities for Lereko. But most importantly, these executives work closely with management in the businesses where Lereko has an interest. Lereko chooses investments carefully - believing in long term partnerships where it can add value and, together with management, grow the business.

The role of the three Lereko senior executives (Mr Moosa, Dr Molefe and Dr Gwagwa), amongst other things, is to identify and exploit synergies between the business units for the benefit of the company and business partners. For a major transaction in a specialised industry, Lereko’s model is to recruit specialised senior executives to join the Lereko team and act as an executive interface between Lereko and its investee.

Another area of expertise is in the structuring of broad based empowerment transactions encompassing worker and community trusts and Public Benefit Organisations. This work is facilitated by the intimate knowledge Lereko executives have gained over a number of years in the political and development arena, of the aspirations of local communities.
