LEREKO IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN AND AFRICAN CONTEXTS

Lereko has extensive influence and networks in all nine South African provinces. These networks include Government, development agencies and local associations. During his tenure as the premier for the North West, Popo Molefe derived an extensive understanding of decision making processes in this sphere of government.

Lulu Gwagwa’s previous experience as CEO of the IDT and at the Commission for the Delineation and Demarcation of Provincial Boundaries, has equipped her with a solid understanding of local heritage and of Government’s socio-economic development agenda. In particular her role at the IDT gave her first hand experience in managing and implementing programmes that utilise this region’s heritage to identify service and development opportunities.

Valli Moosa was formerly the Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism and is the former President of the World Conservation Union. In this former role, he was responsible for the declaration of the very first world heritage sites in South Africa, namely The Cradle of Humankind, Robben Island, the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park and the Ukhahlamba / Drakensberg Park. Valli’s contribution to heritage in South Africa was also recognised when he was awarded a Gold Award by the South African Heritage Society in 2004.

Within the ranks of Lereko’s principal members resides vast knowledge and a wealth of experience in working with other African countries. African market establishment and penetration is often easier accomplished by black-led groupings. With NEPAD and the economic drive for African expansion by key players in the South African economy, many business opportunities exist on the continent.
